Used – Ewww? or Ooooh!?

Is it weird to buy a breastpump off Craigslist?

Yes?

No?

Maybe?

It’s just that they’re so expensive, and they are so much more affordable used.  These things can be sterilized, right?  Am I insane for even humoring the idea?

You can replace ALL the pieces (the cables, flanges, membranes, etc.) except the pump itself, and they’re fairly cheap. And I can’t imagine how you could possibly get milk into the pump.

That being said, the manufacturers are VERY VERY vocal about pumps being a single-owner purchase, and they are not liable for anything bad that happens to your baby from a borrowed pump. More importantly, they won’t do warranty repairs.

Based on that, I guess the question is, how much cheaper? If it’s cheap enough that you wouldn’t feel horrible if you had to buy a new one if the craigslist one broke in 2 months, I might do it.

Well after reading your and Rebecca’s comments, I think I’m going to stick with a new one. I’ll just have to suck it up.

Don’t do it! They have a limited shelf life, and depending on how much it’s been used already it could conk out on you in a very short time span. I bought one from someone here in JP and totally got scammed–it sounded “sick” right from the beginning as my lactation consultant said, and I had to replace it after only a few weeks. $100 down the drain, plus the price of a new pump. Yes, these things are expensive but you really want a pump that works! And they’re on sale at BRU all the time. If I had it to do over again I would skip the used ordeal and just get a nice, fresh pump for the higher price.

      And congratulations by the way!

Rebecca, sorry it’s taken me so long to respond, but I wanted you to know that I’m taking your advice to heart. I’d hate to be out the $100 or $125 from a Craigslist pump when I could just suck it up and buy a good one now. What pump did you end up buying?

And, a belated congratulations to you too!

Well, I just may be using the lovely gift card I got from work to go toward this. Ha!
